Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

This is the Unpopular Opinions Book Tag, created by The Book Archer on YouTube. As you have probably gathered from the name the questions all pertain to the person answering’s unpopular opinions about books. So without any further ado let’s get into it!

What is a popular book or series that you didn’t like?

handmaids tale margaret atwood
I read The Handmaid’s Tale and thought it was just fine… Of course the topic is important and the story in itself is interesting, but I just couldn’t bring myself to care. I have accepted (after reading The Penelopiad) that I just don’t enjoy Margaret Atwood’s writing.

Since the ‘sequel’ to The Handmaid’s Tale has been announced and everyone is super hyped about it, I thought this was the best answer to this question. I don’t care. And before you ask, no I haven’t seen the tv show and I’m not planning on watching it either.

What is a popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love?

lincoln in the bardo george saunders
I just compared my scores, for the books I’ve read this year, to the average on Goodreads and apparently they more or less match most of the time… The first one I found that I loved (loved, loved, loved!!!) and Goodreads was a bit meh about was Lincoln in the Bardo.

I guess it makes sense, it’s a bit of a hit or miss book. It isn’t written in the traditional way. You have to really pay attention. So it’s normal that it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

But I absolutely loved this book. So much so that it’s going to be my first book of 2019. (I want to start this tradition where the first book of the year is always going to be a reread.)

What is a love triangle in a book or series where the main character ended up with the person you did not want them to end up with?

Uuuuuuuhhhhmmmm, it’s been a while since I read a book with a love triangle… I think I haven’t read one this year… the last one was probably The Remnant Chronicles and I can’t even remember who she ended up with… Although it was probably the good guy, in which case… logical but don’t agree… why don’t the antagonists ever have a happy ending?

What is a popular book genre that you hardly reach for?

Thrillers. Although I think I would like them, I just don’t read them… Probably because I’m used to reading other stuff. If you have a favourite thriller to recommend, let me know!

What is a popular or beloved character that you do not like?

Aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe benjamin alire saenz tbr

Ari from Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. I don’t actually dislike him. I just thought I’d like him more based on all of the praise this book has gotten over the years.

Who is a popular author that you can’t seem to get into?

I already mentioned Margaret Atwood. I also struggle with John Green. I loved The Fault in our Stars but hated Paper Towns. It’s been so long since I read those books (and wrote the reviews) but I haven’t picked up another John Green books since and I don’t think I ever will again. He’s just not for me…

What is a popular book trope that you are tired of seeing?

Insta-love. I like seeing relationships develop, whether they are romantic relationships or friendships, I like seeing the author craft the story in relation to the characters he’s writing. I want them to go on a journey, even if it’s just within themselves. Of course you can feel attracted to someone when you meet them but deciding he/she/they are THE ONE is just laaaaazy writing. At least let them prove to you why they are worthy of your time instead of immediately starting to plan your future together.

What is a popular book or series that you have no interest in reading?

The Cormoran Strike books by Robert Galbraith aka JK Rowling comes to mind because everyone was so excited when the new book came out this year. Nope… not interested.

What is a movie or TV show adaption of a book or series that you like more than the book/s?

night manager

The Night Manager. That was a GREAT tv show! Started reading the book but it’s massive and didn’t really grab my attention.

And there you go. Where do you agree or disagree? Have any favourite thrillers to share?

See you tomorrow!!

  1. I completely agree about The Handmaid’s Tale! And I didn’t love The Penelopiad either. The only other Atwood I’ve read is The Blind Assassin and that one was actually pretty good, but after disliking 2/3 I’m hesitant to read more from her. And I loved Lincoln in the Bardo too!

      1. I think I’m going to give her one more try because I watched Alias Grace on Netflix and LOVED IT so I do want to give that book a chance… but if I end up disliking it I think it’s over between me and Atwood. Lincoln was brilliant! I was so happy it won the Booker.
